  5.     DIED. Paul-Emile Leger, 87, Roman Catholic Archbishop of
  6. Montreal from 1950 to 1967 who startled Canadians when he
  7. announced that he would quit his position to go to Africa to
  8. minister to lepers and handicapped children; in Montreal. Leger
  9. was a leader of the progressive forces at the Second Vatican
  10. Council, urging that the princes of the church give up some of
  11. their ostentation and that the church show greater respect for
  12. other faiths. After touring African leper colonies in 1963,
  13. Leger decided to work in Cameroon. He explained that he had
  14. "reached the age where a certain sclerosis of soul and body
  15. might set in."
